March 5 Weekly News

PASTOR WHITMORE will begin an adult instruction class this Tuesday, March 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Room for those who have indicated they would like to learn more about our Lutheran doctrine and become communicant members of our congregation and for anyone else in the congregation who would like a review of our doctrine.  If you have not yet signed up, but would like to attend, contact Pastor at 712-303-1256 or pastorwhitmore@whitecreek.org as soon as possible.

 

OUR MIDWEEK LENTEN WORSHIP, Behold, Your King: Meditation on Selected Royal Psalms, continues this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.  Psalm 2 is the selected reading for this worship.  The Guild will be serving ham with various salads and desserts before worship, beginning at 5:45 p.m.

 

HAVE YOU EVER wanted to speak to someone about their church attendance, but couldn’t find the words to say?  Have you ever been concerned about those who are not coming to the Lord’s house and wanted to do something about it?  As we continue to walk together in a common faith, St. John’s Evangelism Committee is looking for those in the congregation who would like to help in our effort to reach those in our congregation who have become inactive in their worship life for one reason or another.  We will be offering a training course to aid in conversing with our brothers and sisters who are not regularly meeting with us for divine worship.  The training will take place the last week of March at a time that is to be decided.  May God bless you as you consider this opportunity for strengthening our life together in Christ.

MEMORIALS/GIFTS OF RECOGNITION:  If you would like to honor a loved one by giving a memorial or a gift of recognition for a birthday, anniversary, or other special event, those may be made at the school office in person or by mail.  A card will be sent to the family/individual acknowledging that the gift was sent to White Creek Lutheran School as well as being listed in our school notes and church newsletter.  All memorials/recognition gifts for WCLS will be used for various special projects of the school.

VALPARAISO UNIVERSITY CHORALE, one of the top Lutheran choirs in the nation, will perform in concert this Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at St. Paul, Clifty, at 7:00 p.m. There will be a free-will offering collected to help offset the cost of the tour.

 

THIS WEDNESDAY, March 8, organist, Dianne Sprunger will present the Noontime Lenten Recital at First Presbyterian Church, 512 7^th Street, Columbus.  Everyone is cordially invited.  Admission is free.

 

MOPS:  The Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) group will meet this Friday, March 10, from 8:45-10:45 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church’s Fellowship Hall.  A panel including Dr. Rosemary Weir, Mrs. Janeen Keinath, and Mrs. Chrissy Heiss will discuss children’s milestones, kindergarten readiness, and preschool.  If you plan to attend, please email mops@zionseymour.org to ensure a place for you and childcare for your little ones if they will be coming with you.

LAKEVIEW MINISTRIES MEN’S GATHERING: This retreat                       on March 31-April 2 will feature Pastor Stephen Henderson speaking on the topic “Man of God.”  The focus will be on how difficult it is in our world to live as a man of God and to seek to build up a bridge for generations after us to rise above our culture.   Fishing and archery tag, a hog roast and deep-fry party, and the opportunity to fellowship with other Christian men while watching the Final Four are among the activities offered.  For more info or to register, contact Dave Vandercar at 812-498-4742 or dvandercar@ gmail.com. THE SEASONS are quickly changing!  This Wednesday, March 1 is Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of the penitential season of Lent.  As such, we will be having a service with the imposition of ashes that evening at 7:00 p.m. in place of our normal Wednesday evening service.  In addition, special services will be held every Wednesday in Lent following the theme, Behold, Your King: Meditations on Select Royal Psalms.  We will be following the Order

of Compline, and there will be no communion during these midweek services (we will be having communion every Sunday during March).  Supper will be held before the services on March 8, March 29, and April 5, beginning at 5:45 p.m.  May God bless the changing of the seasons and ever hold His cross before our eyes as we await our King and the kingdom that He has promised us.  To Him alone be glory forever.  Amen.

THERE WILL BE a committee meeting for the Ethnic Expo today at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul, Clifty.  All persons who would like to help  promote events in our county related to our 500^th Reformation  anniversary as well as plan and coordinate Germany serving as host country for the Ethnic Expo coming up October 13-14 of this year are invited to attend.

 

WIDOW’S WALK:  No one understands a widow’s loss like other widows and our Lord Jesus.  Widow’s Walk meets on the first Monday of the month at a local restaurant at 1:00 p.m. for lunch, a devotion, and the support we can give each other.  Persons may RSVP to 812-378-2075.

 

MARTIN LUTHER MOVIE:  In celebration of the 500^th anniversary of the Reformation this year, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Seymour, is partnering with the Lutheran churches in the community to host viewing of the new movie, Martin Luther: The Idea That Changed the World, on Tuesday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Regal 8 Theaters in Seymour.  Tickets may be purchased online only by using the following link:

REFORMATION 1517-2017:  You ARE saved by works.  You are saved by works.  But not yours.  Jesus did more than die for you.  He lived for you.  Salvation is not merely the forgiveness of sins.  It is the gift of righteousness, received by faith.  This Good News is the focus of the Scriptures.  You do nothing.  God works.  And His works are very good.  Your good works are done in response to salvation.  Justification by grace through faith does not mean good works are bad, but puts them in their proper role.  We live according to God’s will out of thankfulness to His love.

 

ATTENTION: MEN OF GOD:  Come join us for a weekend filled with fellowship, recreation, and faith building at this year’s Men’s Gathering at Lakeview Ministries March 31-April 2.  Rev. THE ALUMINUM CAN DRIVE continues yet today.  A trailer is parked on the church/school grounds to receive items.  Our school’s parent organization, the WCA, sponsors this drive.

 

WCLS COUPON SALE:  White Creek Lutheran School is currently having its annual Whipker’s Market coupon sale.  Coupons ($10) may be ordered from any WCLS student or the school office through Wednesday, March 1.  All proceeds will go toward special school projects.  (The hanging basket flower sale will be held in April.)  Get you coupons for those spring garden projects, summer flowers, or fall produce!

THE HIGH SCHOOL SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS will begin a 6-week session today, using material from Financial Peace University’s high school curriculum. This study will include a mix of video lessons with activities and other curriculum content designed to teach sound financial habits.  All high school students are invited to come.  Questions???  See Jean Jack.

TRINITY OPEN HOUSE: Trinity Lutheran High School invites students and their families to its final open house this afternoon from 2:00-4:00 PM.  All interested eighth grade students will receive a $75 voucher that covers half of the registration costs at Trinity for the 2017-2018 school year.  Please enter through the commons.

PETER LUTHERAN CHURCH, Waymansville, will be sponsoring a Soup & Sandwich Supper and Euchre Party this evening.  The supper will begin at 5:00 p.m. ($5/person) with Euchre following at 6:30 p.m. (also $5/person).  All proceeds will go to support mission projects of St. Peter.  Everyone invited.

THE ANNUAL VOTER’S MEETING will be held this afternoon at 1:30 p.m.  Election of officers for 2017 will be among the business at hand.  All confirmed members of our congregation are encouraged to attend.

REFORMATION 500-BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY:  2017 is an historic year as we commemorate the 500^th anniversary of the Reformation.  A committee is being formed to promote events in our county related to this celebration as well as plan and coordinate Germany serving as host country for the Ethnic Expo coming up October 13-14 of this year.  An organizational meeting will be held next Sunday, January 29, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul, Clifty.  The committee is open to all interested persons.  If you have any questions, please contact Colin Scheidt at cscheidt05@comcast.net or 812-378-2655.

PETER LUTHERAN CHURCH, Waymansville, will be sponsoring a Soup & Sandwich Supper and Euchre Party next Sunday, January 29.  The supper will begin at 5:00 p.m. ($5/person) with Euchre following at 6:30 p.m. (also $5/person).  All proceeds will go to support mission projects of St. Peter.  Everyone invited.
