A SPECIAL THANK-YOU to Jean Voelker, Janeen Blomenberg, and members of Jean Jack’s Bible study for the Reformation banners.  Five of the banners are the five solas, Sola Scriptura (scripture alone), Sola Fide (faith alone), Sola Gratia (grace alone), Solus Christus (Christ alone), and Soli Deo Gloria (to the glory of God alone).  The Five Solas are five Latin phrases that emerged during the Reformation to summarize the Reformers’ theological convictions about the essentials of Christianity.  The sixth banner is the LCMS logo commemorating the 500^th Anniversary of the Reformation:  It’s Still All About Jesus.

THE QUARTERLY VOTERS’ MEETING will be held next Sunday, October 8, at 7:00 p.m.  All confirmed members of our congregation, 18 years and older, are encouraged to attend.

BUILDING FUND UPDATE:  The congregation set the goal of paying off the school expansion loan in October, 2017.  As of September 15, the bank account balance of the Building Fund was $10,021.71.  The loan payoff is now $42,300.00.  To reach our goal, we need to raise $32,278.29 by the end of October.  Building Fund envelopes are available in the narthex for your remaining pledge/contribution. – Phil Burbrink, Building Fund Treasurer    

SHARE YOUR GERMAN/LUTHERAN HERITAGE:  As part of our 500th Anniversary of the Reformation celebration, we would like to have on display items related to our German/Lutheran heritage - German baptismal, wedding, and confirmation certificates, old photos, German books, German Bibles and hymnals, and anything relating to the past.  If you have something that you would like to share, please contact Jean Voelker, Janeen Blomenberg, or Becky for information cards to go with your items. 

LWML ZONE FALL RALLY:  Showing Mercy Near and Far is the theme of the LWML Fall Rally to be held at Grace, Columbus, October 21, beginning at 1:00 p.m.  The program will feature Gene Ernst, manager of the local Orphan Grain Train, followed by a workshop to assemble cleaning buckets for that organization. The following donations are being collected for this workshop:                      **1 large sponge    **1 roll paper towels    **2 gallons liquid cleaner 

(Mr. Clean, Pine Sol, Lysol)       **1 powder cleaner (Comet, Ajax)        **1 pair kitchen latex gloves **1 broom      **1 mop   

The Orphan Grain Train is also receiving hygiene items: soap, wash cloth, toothbrush and paste, shampoo, deodorant, tissue packets all wrapped up in a large bath towel and secured with two heavy rubber bands.  All items may be brought to the narthex.

OPEN HOUSE: Trinity Lutheran High School invites students and their families to an open house today 2:00-4:00 p.m.  Please enter through the commons. All interested eighth grade students in attendance will receive a $75 voucher that covers registration costs at Trinity for the 2018-2019 school year.

OCTOBERFEST will be held today at Faith Lutheran Church, 2200 S. High St., Bloomington, noon-3:00 p.m., celebrating the Lutheran Reformation’s 500th anniversary with food, live music, and demonstrations of German life.  Kids will help build a large-scale castle from boxes.  Everyone invited to join them!

ST. JOHN’S, SAUERS, Men’s Club is sponsoring a Soup & Sandwich Supper and Bazaar today from 4:00-7:00 p.m.  Carry-outs are available.  Everyone invited.

                 

MOTHERS OF PRESCHOOLERS (MOPS) would like to invite all mothers to their meeting this Friday, October 6, from 8:45-10:45 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Seymour.  Sandy Franke will be speaking on the topic, “Prioritize Your Life.:  Childcare is provided as well as a light breakfast.  Please email mops@zionseymour.org to register.

“But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd…”  Foolish Pharisees!  They fear men more than they fear God, and so they miss out on the great blessing of knowing Jesus and His love.  All our sins are like this: we fear something more than we fear God.  And how foolish that is!  Just think of the blessings we miss out on whenever we place our fear or trust in something other than God.

MANY THANKS from Ryan & Emily (Kerkhof) Cremeans for all the thoughts and prayers for their newborn son, LUKE EZRA, as he arrived about 5 weeks early and had to remain in the hospital for several days.  Luke has been able to go home and is doing well.  He arrived on September 15, weighing 7 lbs. 5 ozs. and measuring 21 ins.  God’s blessings to them and prayers for continuing health and strength for Luke!

REMINDER TO ETHNIC EXPO BOOTH WORKERS:  White Creek’s shift at the host country’s booth is on Friday, October 13, from 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Thank you to those who agreed to help.  Please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to enjoy the smells of authentic German bratwurst, sauerkraut, and German potato salad!

September 10 Weekly News

OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL YEAR begins today at 10:15 a.m. (10:30 on communion Sundays).  The Adult Bible Study (including the high school students) will be looking at the life of Martin Luther and the reason behind the Reformation by viewing the video series put out by Lutheran Hour Ministries.  Sunday School children will meet in the following rooms:  Preschool-PreK: kindergarten room; K-6^th grade: 1^st grade room; 7^th-8^th grade: 5^th grade room; high school: fellowship room and then 2^nd grade room for discussion.  Teachers are still needed!  Please contact Jessica Morphew.

“Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”  What does it mean to have childlike faith?  Certainly Jesus does not want us to have a faith that is childish: we are not called to ignorance or silliness.  Rather, we are called to trust the way a child trusts: with complete confidence in the Father.  We show that confidence in our lives when we follow His directives for our life: Father knows best, so we’ll take His advice!

OUR ANNUAL SMORGASBORD/BAZAAR is coming up next Saturday, September 9, 4:30-7:00 p.m.  It’s still not too late to sign up and take this opportunity to work and have fun with your church family!  Any donations for the bake sale and/or bazaar (including the second time around table) will be gratefully accepted this Friday afternoon, September 8, and Saturday morning, September 9.  Please note that items donated to the second time around table will be sold for $1.00 unless the person donating prices them beforehand.

MUM SALE:  Our school is currently sponsoring its fall mum sale.  Please see any WCLS student by this Wednesday, September 6, if you would like to place an order.  Eight-inch and fourteen-inch mums in a variety of colors are included in this sale.  All proceeds go to our Children’s Fund to help with field trip expenses.

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life?”  He who dies with the most toys….is dead.  But the one who trusts in the Lord, even though he dies, yet shall he live.  We live out our trust in the Lord by faithfully fulfilling the roles God has given us to play in home, church, and society as loving, generous people.  Those who don’t know the Lord are afraid to be generous because they think that what they give away is lost to them.  But we who know the Lord know that the things of this world become true blessings when they are used for God’s Kingdom.

OUR ANNUAL SMORGASBORD/BAZAAR is coming up on Saturday, September 9, 4:30-7:00 p.m.  Many helpers are needed for this yearly church-sponsored event!  Sign-up sheets for workers and donations are in the narthex today.  Sign up and take this opportunity to work and have fun with your church family!  Any donations for the bake sale and/or bazaar (including the second time around table) will be gratefully accepted on Friday afternoon, September 8, and Saturday morning, September 9.  Please note that items donated to the second time around table will be sold for $1.00 unless the person donating prices them beforehand.

MEMORIAL BRICKS for our sidewalk or Memory Garden may be ordered now through Labor Day.  Bricks are $100.  Contact Ernie & Donna Dettmer or Larry & Janice Claycamp if interested in placing an order.  If you would like a special clip-art included on your brick, see Becky in the office for a sheet of what is available.  Any brick orders received after Labor Day will be held until next year’s order is placed.

BIBLE STUDY:  Jean Jack’s Bible Study, “Four Parables of Jesus,” will begin on Wednesday, September 13, at 5:00 PM and continue every Wednesday for eight sessions.  This course will help you understand the meaning of these parables for the people who first heard them and how they still apply to us today.  Contact Mrs. Jack (714-768-5731) or Becky in the office if you would like to attend.

MOPS:  Mothers Of Preschoolers of Seymour invites all mothers with young children to it’s kick-off event this Friday, September 1, from 8:45-10:45 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church (1501 Gaiser Dr., Seymour).  Bring your little ones for silly songs and story time, then settle in with a cup of coffee for some peaceful conversation while childcare workers entertain the children.  Email mops@zionseymour.org to register.

MUM SALE:  Our school is currently sponsoring its fall mum sale.  Please see any WCLS student if you would like to place an order.  Eight-inch and fourteen-inch mums in a variety of colors are included in this sale.  All proceeds go to our Children’s Fund to help with field trip expenses.

OPEN HOUSE:  Trinity Lutheran High School invites students and their families to an open house on Saturday, September 16, from 8:00-10:00 a.m.  All interested eighth grade students in attendance will receive a $75 voucher that covers registration costs at Trinity for the 2018-2019 school year.  Please enter through the gymnasium.

DISHWASHER AVAILABLE:  A Champion 208/220 volt dishwasher that was used in our school kitchen is available to anyone interested.  New pump motor and door seals – first come, first serve for a free-will donation.  Contact the church office if interested.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:                      Matthew 16:27              

“For the Son of Man is going to come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will repay each person according to what he has done.”  St. Paul talks about rewards on the Last Day in 1 Cor. 3, and Jesus says more about this “repaying” in Matt. 19:27-30.  Bottom line:  your good works can’t buy you heaven, but in Christ your good works do matter; they’re pleasing your Heavenly Father, and they will be rewarded.  In other words: your sacrifices for the Lord’s Kingdom are not in vain, they are not unnoticed by your Father.  This should encourage you in your faithfulness.

August 20 Weekly News

THERE WILL BE a special voters’ meeting TODAY after worship. Items on the agenda include helping with support to the Chinese ministry in Bloomington and seeking bids for new gutters for our parsonage.  Please stay for this brief meeting.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY:  Beginning September 10 during our regular Bible study time, we will be looking at the life of Martin Luther and the reasons behind the Reformation by looking at a video series put out by Lutheran Hour Ministries.  You do not want to miss this opportunity to learn more about what we will be celebrating in October.  Hope to see you there!” -  In Christ, Pastor Whitmore

OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL YEAR will begin on Sunday, September 10, at 10:30 on communion Sundays and 10:15 on non-communion Sundays.  Teachers/helpers are needed.  Two teachers are needed for each class so they would only teach half the time.  Extra volunteers are always appreciated in the preschool class. “THESES” ARE STILL AVAILABLE.  One aspect of our October 29^th celebration of the 500^th Anniversary of The Reformation includes 95 “theses” posted on the wooden door in the narthex.  Each “theses” has school supplies listed on the back, which will be donated to the Orphan Grain Train special project: School Kits.  If you take a “theses” please return the school supplies or donation for mailing fees on your “theses” by October 1.  A box is available in the narthex for these supplies.

SENIOR LEAGUE MEMBERS will gather for supper at the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Seymour this evening at 5:00 p.m. and will then return to the Fellowship Room for their monthly meeting and socializing.  Guests are always welcome!

MEET THE STAFF – MRS. JESSICA SONS

This year’s new addition to our teaching staff is Mrs. Jessica Sons.  She replaces Mr. Noelker as sixth grade homeroom teacher, leading departmentalized classes for grades five through eight in the areas of social studies and science.  Mrs. Sons, an Indiana-licensed teacher for grades 5-12, is a graduate of Indiana University Southeast, formerly taught at Trinity Lutheran High School, assisted at Immanuel, and has done substitute teaching in Jackson and Jennings Counties.  She has served as a Jackson County 4-H leader since 1997, has been a Girl Scout leader, and currently teaches Sunday school at St. John’s Sauers, where she and her family hold membership.  Mrs. Sons has two children, a daughter Kiley, who is in seventh grade at Sauers, and a son Colin, who is a junior at Seymour High School.  Husband Jeremy is a mechanical and robotics engineer at Faurecia.  We welcome Mrs. Sons to our White Creek family and give thanks to God for providing our school with a gifted and dedicated teacher.

“Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”  These are the words of faith, for faith means receiving what God gives.  And God has given us so much more than just the crumbs that fall from the table – He has given us life, salvation, body and soul, eyes and ears, possessions and income.  That’s where our stewardship starts: with faith in the God Who is the greatest Giver.
