February 8 Weekly News


MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH FOUNDATION are asked to meet in church TODAY after worship.

 

LADIES AID MEMBERS may pick up their LWML Quarterly (names are on them) on the north narthex shelf.   The Bible study for February is How Can I Control MY Tongue? on page 16.

 

YOUTH GROUPS will this evening at 7 PM.

 

THE 175TH ANNIVERSARY CALENDARS will be available today after worship in the front hall of the school.  Each household will receive one complimentary copy.  Additional copies may be purchased for $10/calendar.

 

ALL-SCHOOL QUILT:  Check out the quilt in the front hall of the school that White Creek students designed in celebration of our 175th anniversary.  Also on display beside it is the student quilt from our 150th anniversary in 1990.

 

CONGREGATIONAL HISTORY:  The first six years of St. John's history was a period of dark spiritual confusion.  Lutheran ministers were scarce.  Pastors from a German settlement in Jackson County served this congregation from time to time with Word and Sacrament.  But these pastors were rationalists, putting reason above God's Word.

 

VALENTINE BABYSITTING:  St. John’s White Creek Youth will be providing Valentines Date Night babysitting for children through 5th grade this coming  Friday evening, February 13,  from 6:00-10:00 PM.  Bring your children to the school gym and enjoy a night out!  A free-will donation will be accepted.  Snacks (not a meal) will be provided.

TRINITY OPEN HOUSE: Trinity Lutheran High School invites students and their families to its final open house next Sunday, February 15, from 2:00-4:00 PM.  All interested eighth grade students will  receive a $75 voucher that covers half of the registration costs at Trinity for the 2015-2016 school year.  Please enter through the commons.

 

SENIOR LEAGUE MEMBERS will meet for supper next Sunday evening, February 15, at 5:30 PM at Bob Evans Restaurant and will then return to the Fellowship Room for their monthly meeting and socializing.  Visitors are always welcome! 

 

CONFIRMATION CLASS PICTURES are needed for our upcoming Confirmation Class Roll Call Sunday on June 28.  If you have ANY St. John's Confirmation class pictures, please contact Jean Meyer at 812-343-2361.  These pictures will be copied and returned to their owners and will become a permanent record of our church.

 

ALUMINUM CAN DRIVE:  WCA will be sponsoring an aluminum can drive this coming weekend, February 13-15.  A trailer will be parked on the school grounds to receive items.

 

LAKEVIEW MINISTRIES is seeking individuals who are interested in joining our ministry on a part-time basis.  Needed are individuals to fill both the assistant maintenance and groundskeeper positions.  In general, the assistant maintenance will be responsible for basic repairs and upkeep of the buildings, while the groundskeeper will be responsible for the upkeep and overall appearance of the property.  These positions will both average 20 hours per week, year round.  For more information and to view the job descriptions for each of these positions, please visit www.camplakeview.com and click on the "Job Openings" tab at the top of the screen.  Persons interested in either of these positions may call John Dobrinski, Director of Facilities, at 812-342-4815 or reach him by email at john@camplakeview .com.

 

MEMORIAL CHILI SUPPER:  The Columbus FFA Chapter will sponsor the Annual Frank Burbrink Memorial Chili Supper on Friday, February 20, from 5:00-8:00 PM in the Family Arts Building at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds.  There will also be a silent auction with items that were generously donated from businesses in the community.  Free-will donations will be received for the supper.  All proceeds will go toward scholarships for the Columbus FFA seniors.

 

THE LCMS CHURCHES of the Columbus Circuit will be sponsoring noted speaker and head of the Ruth Institute, Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, speaking on The Impact of Re-Defining Marriage on Children at the Southside Elementary School auditorium on Monday evening, March 2, at 7 PM.  This presentation will explore the profound and lasting consequences resulting from re-defining marriage and parenthood.  The public is invited.
