June 14 Weekly News


A PRAYER SERVICE is held every Wednesday at 8:30 AM, followed by Bible study on the Parables of Jesus.  Everyone whose schedule allows is invited to come and join in this morning of prayer and study.

 

CONGREGATIONAL HISTORY:  In the summer of 1889, a school was built.  The cost was reported as $1232.54 in the Centennial Jubilee publication, but later the cost was reported as $840.00 in the 125th Anniversary publication.  In 1875, the congregation spent $925 to build a new house for its teacher.

 

REUNION SUNDAY, a part of our 175th anniversary celebration, will be held on June 28.  If you know of any former confirmands, teachers, or pastors who no longer attend St. John's, please invite them to this service.  After worship, there will be light refreshments, and the confirmation class photos that have been collected will be displayed.  Pastor Marcus Jauss will be the guest preacher for this service.

 

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for our 175 Anniversary Old Fashion Mission Festival to be held on Sunday, July 26, immediately after the worship service.  Everyone is invited to come join in the fun, food, games, prizes for all ages!  There will also be antique displays.  Watch the weekly bulletin, July news, and the quarterly newsletter for more information as the time nears.

 

THE FIRST SET of 175th Anniversary plates was sent back due to the quality.  A new sample is being printed and will be sent to our committee to approve before the entire order is printed.  Watch for more updates......

A DEPOSIT OF $294.00 has been made to our school's account on behalf of Thrivent Financial's Thrivent Choice program by the directed Choice Dollars of the following:  Ken & Kyra Bode, Kay Clow, Lou & Jean Voelker, and Lindsey Von Fange.

 

THE ORPHAN GRAIN TRAIN is collecting clothing from birth to age 5 that can be sent from our new warehouse on the first overseas shipment to orphanages in Latvia.  These clothes can be brought to the Orphan Grain Train Open House on Sunday, July 26, (everyone invited-will be after our Old Fashion Mission Festival).  Clothing may also be collected and brought to a central collection site (call 712-369-1165 for details).

 

VOLUNTEER TRAINING:  The Pregnancy Care Center Summer Volunteer Training will begin with Ministry Orientation night on Wednesday, July 29, from 6-9 PM.  Training will continue on Thursday, July 30, and Friday, July 31, from 8:30 AM-4:30 PM.  Training will be held at Memorial Baptist Church, 2320 7th St., Columbus.  For more information, contact Christy Shaw at 1-866-510-5067 or online at ChristyS@affirminglifeonline.org.

 

TRINITY LUTHERAN HIGH SCHOOL is seeking candidates for a part-time chemistry teacher.  Subjects would include chemistry I and II for three periods four days a week.  Teacher must be licensed in the state of Indiana.  Interested persons may drop off a resume at the Trinity office by Thursday, June 25.

 

GOLF OUTING:  Trinity Lutheran High School will host the 12th Annual Cougar Classic golf outing on Saturday, June 27, at Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour.  Cost per golfer is $60, which includes carts, contests, prizes, and an awards dinner.  Registrations must be received by this Wednesday, June 17, online at www.trinitycougars.org or by calling Aaron Rudzinski at 812-524-8547.

June 7 Weekly News


TODAY WE REJOICE WITH Cody Ross & Mikayla Cregg as they bring their son, KACEN MICHAEL ROSS, to be baptized.  Kacen's sponsors are his uncle, Tyler Ross, and family friend, Allison Purdue.  God's blessings to you, Kacen!

 

CONGREGATIONAL HISTORY:  Under Pastor Juengel, contributions, which in the past were assessed each member, were henceforth to be made willing.  Principles were set up regarding calls sent to pastors and teachers.  Church discipline was at its height.  Members were brought before the church council for not keeping their financial obligation, for permitting dancing in their homes, and for many other reasons.  As early as 1868, there was a house-to-house canvas for funds to help Synodical work.

 

LOOKING FOR CONFIRMATION PICTURES:  The deadline for turning in Confirmation pictures IS TODAY. The following Confirmation class pictures are still needed: 2001, 1971,  (professional pictures best for any 1970s pictures) 1951, 1945, 1932, 1933, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1920, and all years prior to 1920 except 1918 and 1919.  The original picture is needed to make a good copy.

May 31 Weekly News


TODAY WE OBSERVE Trinity Sunday, which is the first Sunday after Pentecost.  Trinity Sunday celebrates the Christian Doctrine of the Trinity, the three persons of God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  The Sundays following Pentecost until Advent are numbered from this day.

 

MEMORIAL SUNDAY is being held today as part of our 175th celebration.  Greg Hercamp will give a bit of history about our Founding Fathers, and a cemetery tour will be conducted after the worship service.   Our members who have served or are currently serving will be recognized, and a video tribute will be           presented.   Senator Joe Donnelly’s office has sent our church a certificate of recognition and a flag that was flown over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., in honor of St. John’s members who have served in the military.  Also, a table will be set up between the church and school today after worship for people to sign cards and drop in the boxes to send to those who are currently serving our country.

 

TODAY’S ALTAR FLOWERS have been given by Clara Claycamp & Family in loving remembrance of what would have been Clara & Dean’s 56th wedding anniversary today.

 

THE JUNE CALENDAR/NEWS will be available from the ushers after today’s worship.

 

CONGREGATIONAL HISTORY:  Under the leadership of Pastor H.J. Juengel (1867-1887), the congregation grew.  Steps were taken to abolish any anti-scriptural practices within the body of Christ.  The $3.00 fee, which was charged new members, was abolished.

May 24 Weekly News


PENTECOST is being observed today.  Pentecost is the commemoration and celebration of the receiving of the Holy Spirit by Jesus' disciples.  On the Day of Pentecost, a violent wind filled the room, and tongues of fire came to rest on each one, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, which gave them the power of communication to tell the world of God's glory.  The gift of the Holy Spirit that was given to all believers on the first Pentecost is also promised and given to all of us and our children so that we can continue to proclaim the Good News.

 

THE ANNIVERSARY T-SHIRTS that were ordered will be available for pick up today in the Fellowship Room after worship.

 

THE CHURCH OFFICE will be closed tomorrow in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.  June calendar and news items need to be given to Becky by Tuesday.

 

LADIES AID MEMBERS are reminded of their Bible study and meeting this Wednesday, May 27, beginning at 9:00 AM.  Guests are always welcome!

 

EVERYONE IS INVITED to the graduation of our WCLS eighth graders this Thursday evening at 7:00 PM.  Mr. Kyler will be the guest speaker.  A reception and awards presentation will be held in the gym after the graduation service.

 

MEMORIAL SUNDAY will be held next Sunday, May 31, as part of our 175th celebration.  A video tribute of St. John's members who have served or are currently serving in the military will be presented.  Our founding fathers will be recognized, and a cemetery tour will be conducted. 

 

CONGREGATIONAL HISTORY:  The altar, pulpit, and lectern are original to the original building of 1862.  In 1867, a pipe organ was installed at a cost of $1179.  Also in 1867, two bells were placed in the tower.  These are the same bells we hear today.  In 1868, the growing congregation required an expansion of the balcony.

May 17 Weekly News


SUNDAY SCHOOL/BIBLE CLASS end today for the summer and will begin again the Sunday after Labor Day, September 13.                

 

DUE TO A DELAY, the 175th anniversary t-shirts will be available for pick-up next Sunday after worship.  

 

SENIOR LEAGUE MEMBERS will gather this evening at 5:30 p.m. at Bob Evans Restaurant for supper and will then return to the Fellowship Room for their monthly meeting and socializing.

 

YOUTH GROUPS will meet this evening at 7:00 PM.

 

PHIL'S FRIENDS WALK:  The 3rd Annual Phil's Friends Walk will be held TODAY at 1:00 PM here at White Creek.  Monetary and CD donations are still being accepted.  Phil Zielke will be speaking at our adult Bible Class today and tomorrow at Zion Preschool at 10 AM and WCLS at 2 PM.

 

LADIES AID MEMBERS are reminded of the birthday party this Wednesday at the Lutheran Home.  Please be there by 1:30 PM.  (Those donating, remember your refreshment!). 

 

CONGREGATIONAL HISTORY:  On April 27, 1862, the cornerstone of the church was laid.  Pastor Folf of Clifty preached and used 1 Corinthians 3:11 as his text.  The new church was dedicated on September 14, 1862.  By that time, the congregation had 60 voting members and 400 souls.

CONGRATULATIONS TO Cody Ross & Mikayla Cregg on the birth of their son, KACEN MICHAEL ROSS, on Saturday, May 9.  Kacen arrived weighing 6 lbs. 10 ozs. and measuring 19.5 ins.  Everyone is doing fine - God's blessings to them!

THE TLHS ART CLUB will be hosting Art In the Afternoon today, beginning at 3 PM with a "Paint Your Own Canvas" project led by art teacher, Carrie Adler and assisted by Art Club members.  Cost to participate in the canvas painting is $25.  Please RSVP to the school office (812-524-8547) by Friday, May 8, to reserve a spot.  Following the canvas painting (approx. 5 PM), a soup dinner will be held ($5/person), featuring soup, bread, drink, and dessert-no reservation needed.  During this event, persons may view and bid on some remarkable refinished furniture in this first-ever FurnARTure Auction.  Students have refinished donated furniture pieces, and those items will be up for sale in a silent auction.  The bidding will start in the afternoon and will close at 6 PM.

May 10 Weekly News


TODAY'S ALTAR FLOWERS have been given by Mike & Kathy Ross in thanksgiving for their many blessings and in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary tomorrow.  May God grant you many more happy years, Mike & Kathy!

 

ASCENSION DAY is observed this Thursday.  According to the New Testament in the Bible, Jesus Christ met several times with his disciples during the 40 days after His resurrection to instruct them on how to carry out His teachings. It is believed that on the 40th day He took them to the Mount of Olives, where they watched as He ascended to heaven.  Ascension Day marks the end of the Easter season and occurs ten days before Pentecost.

 

THE BOARD OF EDUCATION will meet this Wednesday evening at 5:30 PM.

CONGREGATIONAL HISTORY:  A discussion arose as to whether or not a cross should be placed on top of the church tower.  Some thought this to be too "catholic."  After Pastor Klinkenberg spoke for more than an hour explaining the significance and appropriateness of Christian symbols, the congregation, by a vote of 39 to 8, resolved to have the cross grace the tower of our church.

PHIL'S FRIENDS WALK:  The 3rd Annual Phil's Friends Walk will be held next Sunday, May 17, at 1:00 PM here at White Creek.  Handmade tie-dyed t-shirts with professional lettering in memory of Kristie Wessel will be for sale today after church for $15 (if you purchase, be sure to wear it to the Walk!) and also can coolers for $5, with all proceeds going to Phil's Friends. May 3 Weekly News

THE ALL-CHURCH MEMBER PICTURE will be taken today, after church.  All members are encouraged to be a part of this picture!

 

175TH ANNIVERSARY T-SHIRTS are on display in the narthex, and order forms are on the table beside the display.  The deadline for turning in the order forms with payment is TODAY.  They may be given to any anniversary committee member or put on Becky's desk in the church office. CONGREGATIONAL HISTORY:  Brick kilns were built in the fields not far from the new church site.  Most of the bricks were made and fired in sight of the church on the Henry Wohrman and Fred Dorfmeier farms.  Great timbers were hewn from the surrounding forests.  Most of the lumber, as well as most of the labor, was donated by members.

THE TLHS ART CLUB will be hosting Art In the Afternoon on Sunday, May 17, beginning at 3 PM with a "Paint Your Own Canvas" project led by art teacher, Carrie Adler and assisted by Art Club members.  Cost to participate in the canvas painting is $25.  Please RSVP to the school office (812-524-8547) by Friday, May 8, to reserve a spot.  Following the canvas painting (approx. 5 PM), a soup dinner will be held ($5/person),-no reservation needed.  During this event, persons may view and bid on some remarkable refinished furniture in this first-ever FurnARTure Auction.  Students have refinished donated furniture pieces, and those items will be up for sale in a silent auction.  The bidding will start in the afternoon and will close at 6 PM.
