SUNDAY SCHOOL AND BIBLE CLASS will begin today after worship at 10:30 AM.

SENIOR LEAGUE MEMBERS are reminded they will meet next Sunday evening, September 20, Bob Evans restaurant at 5:30 PM for supper and then return to the Fellowship Room for their monthly meeting and socializing.

 

CHURCH HISTORY:  The first Ladies Aid Bazaar was held on September 12, 1931.  Profit from that Bazaar was $44.77.  The first Smorgasbord was held at noon after church in September of 1981.  Cost of the meal was $5.00 per person.

CROSSLIFE MINISTRIES AUXILIARY will meet Monday, September 21, at 7 PM at Zion Lutheran Church.  Members from Borchers Lutheran Church will also host the meeting.  Final plans for the Fall Luncheon and Bake Sale to be held Friday, October 16, at Immanuel Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall will be discussed.  All are invited to enjoy the evening of fellowship and become more familiar with the ministry to individuals, marriages, and families throughout Jackson and Bartholomew counties.

CHURCH HISTORY:  May 13, 1930, Ladies' Aid was organized at the parsonage.  The meeting was opened at 2:00 PM with a scripture reading by Rev. Schulenburg.  It was decided to meet once a month on the last Thursday of each month.  Each member was to pay ten cents a month in dues.  That money was to be used for home church purposes.  There would be a free-will offering taken for missions.

SCHOOL FUNDING WORKSHOP:  On Saturday, September 12, GraceWorks Ministries will be at White Creek to present a school funding workshop.   As discussed in the last voters' meeting, the Board of Education is exploring funding options to make our school financially secure for coming generations.  A listing of the day's sectionals has been posted on the school bulletin board in the front hallway.  --  The presentation will run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on that Saturday.  Lunch and refreshments will be provided.  If you are interested in attending, please contact Jan Buss.  Our attendance numbers must be confirmed by this Thursday, September 3rd, so please respond by that date.

 

CONGRATULATIONS TO Micah & Monica Buss on the birth of their daughter.  The baby arrived about 6 weeks early and weighed about 4 lbs. so she will spend some time in the hospital.  God’s blessings to her as she grows and gains strength. 

 

WCLS MUM SALE:  Our school is currently sponsoring its Fall Mum Sale.  Eight and fourteen inch potted mums are available in a variety of colors.  See any WCLS student or check with Becky in the office to order.  All orders with payments must be received by this Wednesday, September 2.  All proceeds go to help cover expenses for special school projects.

 

POSITIONS AVAILABLE:   St. Paul, Clifty, is seeking a Director of the Early Childhood Ministry beginning with the 2016-2017 school year.  The position is part-time (15-20 hours per week).  Applicants would    ideally be synodically trained with a teaching degree and some classroom experience.  Interested applicants should contact the school at 812-376-6504 or by email at preschool@stpaulcolumbus.org for more information.     Trinity Lutheran High School is seeking candidates to teach high school art during a   maternity leave for approximately nine weeks starting in October.  Projects will have been discussed with students, lesson plans will be complete and available, and occasional visits from the teacher will also be helpful during this time frame.  A typical work week would be Tuesday-Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Please contact Daniel Sievert if interested at 812-524-8547.

 

COME AND SUPPORT the TLHS volleyball team as they host a dinner this Thursday, September 3, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. before their first home game against Christian Academy.  Tickets are $5/person and include a BBQ sandwich, chips, drink, and dessert.  Tickets may be purchased from any volleyball player or at the door on the night of the dinner.  Hope to see you there!

August 23 Weekly News

THE CHURCH TIME SURVEY results were 72 voting to keep 9:00 AM church year round, with Sunday School after church, and 54 voting for church at 10:15 AM Sept.-May and 9:00 AM summer and Sunday School starting at 9:00 AM.  The voters decided at the last quarterly meeting to go with the majority vote, so our church starting time will remain at 9:00 AM year round with Sunday School following.  Voters' meetings will be held on Sunday evenings every quarter, except the July meeting, when it will be after church since there is no Sunday School.

 

THERE WILL BE a short Vacation Bible School meeting today after worship.  Please stay in church.  Anyone who would like to help, whether you signed up or not, is encouraged to come to this brief meeting.

MUSIC HERITAGE SUNDAY, a part of our 175th anniversary celebration, will be included in our worship next Sunday.  Our church service will feature the Men's Chorus and will highlight congregational singing of hymns related to the musical heritage of the Lutheran Church.  We will be singing songs by Martin Luther, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Paul Gerhardt, as well as the hymn that was commissioned for our 175th Anniversary.  Pastor Cook will be using the direct translation of the German liturgy for this service.

BIBLE STUDIES:  One of the Bible studies being led by Emily Cook on Luther’s Large Catechism, will begin this evening at 7 PM in the Fellowship Room (no babysitting provided-men are  welcome, too!).  This study is also offered on Wednesday afternoons at 3:30 PM at the parsonage  (babysitting provided). AN 8-WEEK BIBLE STUDY, led by Jean Jack, will begin on Wednesday, September 9, 5:00-6:00 PM, in the Fellowship Room.  "God Is in the Laundry Room" is based on Jeremiah 29:13 and inspires women to see the purpose and significance in every part of their daily life and to seek God in even the smallest tasks.  Contact Jean at 1-714-768-5731 to enroll.

 

THE CHURCH TIME SURVEY needs to be returned to the church office by next Sunday, August 16.  (Extra copies are in the narthex, if needed.)  At the last Quarterly Voters’ Meeting, the voters decided to send out this survey to all church households, and however the majority votes, if any change is decided,  begin that change on the Sunday after Labor Day, September 13.  Watch your weekly bulletin for any update.

 

SENIOR LEAGUE MEMBERS are reminded they will meet next Sunday evening, August 16, at 5:30 PM for supper and will then return to the Fellowship Room for their monthly meeting and socializing.

CHURCH HISTORY:  In January of 1905, it was resolved that corpses be taken into the church for the funeral service.  Prior to that time, viewings were held in the home of the family of the deceased.

 

A FEW VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED to help with this year's Vacation Bible School on Saturday, August 29, from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM. Please look over this list of helpers that are still needed and see where you can use your gifts!

Recreation Leader - plan and lead 2 active, theme based games/activities, for 3 age level groups
Group Leader - lead lesson discussion, classroom activities, and group rotation throughout the day for 2nd-4th graders

Child Care Facilitator - provide care for volunteers' children under the age of 5

Volunteer Assistants - help with various activities throughout the day
