Boundaries

Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not. Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: Physical boundaries help us determine who may touch us and under what circumstances -- Mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions -- Emotional boundaries help us to deal with our own emotions and disengage from the harmful, manipulative emotions of others -- Spiritual boundaries help us to distinguish God's will from our own and give us renewed awe for our Creator -- Often, Christians focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limits and limitations. When confronted with their lack of boundaries, they ask: 

- Can I set limits and still be a loving person? 
- What are legitimate boundaries? 
- What if someone is upset or hurt by my boundaries? 
- How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money? 
- Aren't boundaries selfish? 
- Why do I feel guilty or afraid when I consider setting boundaries?

April 15 Weekly News

TODAY’S ALTAR FLOWERS have been given in loving memory of Alan Schlehuser on what would have been his 23^rd birthday this coming Wednesday, April 18, by Terry, Ruth, and Betsy Schlehuser.

WE REJOICE WITH Darren & Laura Otte as they bring their daughter, CHARLOTTE OPAL, to be baptized this morning. Charlotte’s sponsors are her aunt and uncle, Mazie & Hayden Caudill. God’s blessings to you, Charlotte!

HOLY COMMUNION will be celebrated next Sunday.

THE QUARTERLY VOTERS’ MEETING will be held TODAY in the Fellowship Room immediately after the worship service. All confirmed members of our congregation, 18 years and older, are encouraged to attend.

SENIOR LEAGUE MEMBERS will gather THIS EVENING at 5:30 PM at Bob Evans, West Hill, for supper and then return to the Fellowship Room for their monthly meeting and fellowship.

PASTOR COOK will begin another adult instruction class this Wednesday, April 18, after the worship service. Interested persons (or if you know of someone interested) should contact Pastor or Becky as soon as possible so sufficient materials are available.

A SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY will be held in the Fellowship Room on Tuesday nights from 7-8:30 PM. Join us for God’s Word, prayer, fellowship, snacks, and fun! Discussion topics will vary from week to week. Babysitting will be available for a small fee ($2/child). Please contact Whitney Vandercar (812-371-3983) with questions. No need to enroll – come anytime!

A MEMORIAL SERVICE for Alan Ryan Schlehuser will be held this coming Saturday, April 21, at 6:30 PM here at St. John’s. The wrought-iron fencing will also be dedicated at this time. Everyone is invited to join the Schlehuser family for this time of remembrance.

LUTHERAN COMMUNITY HOME is seeking donations for its quarterly “Dining Room Bonus Buck Sale” this Friday, April 20. Baked goods, candy, toiletries, knick-knacks, jewelry, clothing, etc., or anything you would like to donate would be appreciated. Please bring donations to the Activity Room any time between now and the morning of the sale. Thanks!

FLOWER SALE: Our school is currently holding its spring flower sale. Hanging flower baskets in a variety of types and colors are available for $19 as well as $10 gift cards. All products are from Whipker’s Market. Order forms are available in the narthex or persons may contact Becky in the church office by this Wednesday, April 18, to place an order. All proceeds will go to our students’ field trip fund.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for our Vacation Bible School to be held May 29-30-31 for children 3 years through 5^th grade. Registration will begin next Sunday, April 22.

BASEBALL TICKETS: Ticket price totals for those who ordered tickets for the August 19 Reds/Cubs game are now available in the office – please pay for your tickets as soon as possible, as they have been ordered through the school’s charge card. Tickets will be distributed as soon as they arrive.

This verse came to mind as I heard Jeanne speak at church on Sunday.  What an opportunity we have, right now, to help Kristie Wessel through her battle with cancer.

She needs our prayers, our support, and our bodily help.

 Some of you might have heard of John Romine. He was a friend of mine in high school and at Purdue, and he was also the brother-in-law of Jared Rutan. He also fought a very aggressive form of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In the summer of 2008, he was told he needed a stem cell transplant. The most likely match for most people is one of their siblings, though this is never guaranteed. Neither of John’s sisters were a match, and he had no choice but to wait. While waiting, he and his family put out a plea for people to join the national marrow donor program in the hopes that someone new to the list might be a match for him. Eventually, they did find a match. But it was too late. His cancer had spread and he passed away in December 2008.  He made his family promise to continue doing marrow drives in the hopes that one of these days, no one will have to wait until it’s too late.

Fast forward to the month of March 2012.  Kristie went to the doctor and found out that her Hodgkin’s lymphoma had spread; the next treatment option would most likely be a donor stem cell transplant. I remember talking to Kristie after she found this out. She said she broke down crying in the doctor’s office thinking back to that day in 2008 when she joined the marrow donor program in the hopes of being a match for John. She said she never thought that SHE might be the one to need a donor.  Kristie did not personally know John; she knew of the Romine’s story only thru me. And even though she didn’t know them, she joined the marrow donor program back in 2008 out of pure kindness and generosity. Because she wanted to help someone else get a second chance on life. 

Now, we’re asking you all to give someone that 2^nd chance; and even if it’s not Kristie, then someone else in similar shoes.  As our family’s situation clearly shows, you never know when it might be you or someone you love that’s relying on the kindness and generosity of another person.

April 1 Weekly News

HOLY WEEK WORSHIP: Maundy Thursday worship with Holy Communion will begin at 7 PM. The service, “The Feast of the New Covenant,” will end with the stripping of the Altar. Good Friday service will begin at 7 PM. The altar candles will be extinguished, and the cross will be carried to the cemetery (weather permitting). Our Easter Sunrise service will begin at 7 AM, followed by the Easter breakfast served by our Youth. Sunday School will begin at 9 AM, and the Easter service with Holy Communion will begin at 10:15 AM.

WE REJOICE WITH Mark & Richelle Bushur as they bring their daughter, RUTH MARY RICHELLE, to be baptized during the 10:15 service today. Ruth’s sponsors are her uncle and aunt, Peter & Lois Dooms and cousin, Mary Ann Dooms. Ruth arrived on Saturday, March 24, weighing 8 lbs. 6 ozs. and measuring 20 ½ inches. God’s blessings to you, Ruth!
